The project "Remains of Babel’s Tower” is based on 11 nationalities, each one covered in a different story from the list available at the top menu of this website, in the section "The countries / Os países".

The protagonists are always citizens who were born in a country other than Portugal. Some of them already have Portuguese citizenship, but others keep only their original status to make sure they will continue to be granted access to their country of birth. A few never liked the place they came from, others chose to live between countries according to the seasons and there are still those who may move to new foreign addresses some more times in years to come.

All these people told their story in an informal manner, most of the time in bilingual conversations that flowed naturally, but at certain times also using dictionaries and online translators, drawings on napkins and even some mimicry. It is the offer of translation mechanisms available on the internet, however, that has been facilitating a less painful acculturation than the one previously experienced by former generations of migrants. The technological resources presented today by computers and smartphones speeds up the learning of Portuguese and creating roots in a different society becomes less solitary thanks to the balm provided by tools that, in a few seconds, let you see and hear those who were left on the other side of the world.
